The 1619 Project- New York Times

The 1619 Project is an ongoing initiative from The New York Times Magazine that began in August 2019, the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.

The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehesie Coates- The Atlantic

Although this piece was written around 9 years ago, it still sticks with me as one of the best examinations of the compounding effects of years of economic exploitation and racist policies and practices, as well as how racist systems of oppression transformed over time, changing rather than fading. As Illinoisians I find the section on redlining in Chicago to be particulaly relevant.
