Older Americans Month

It’s that time of year again, Older Americans Month.  It was started back in 1963 when President Kennedy asked that the entire country pay tribute in some way to older persons in our communities.  So every year, May becomes a great time for all of us to show our appreciation for older adults in our community.

The theme for Older Americans Month in 2012 is – Never Too Old to Play!  I think many older citizens can identify with wanting to “Play.” At the East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging, we find that many of the people that call our offices are still very active and want to remain active. And their families want that for them too, because we know that there are lifelong health benefits to staying socially and physically active.

If you receive a phone call about older adults wanting to find volunteer opportunities or ways to stay active, get them in contact with the local RSVP group or use your knowledge of you county to give them fun ideas for being active.

Numerous studies show that people who withdraw from life and from connecting with others tend to become unhappy and withdrawn.  But people who stay physically and mentally active will benefit in various ways.

To find volunteer opportunities or social gatherings in your area, try contacting your local Recreation Center. http://www.state.il.us/aging/1directory/sr_ctr.pdf or your local RSVP by checking http://www.seniorcorps.gov/for_individuals/overview/index.asp
