Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
I recently called Prairie State Legal Services to inquire about issues dealing with grandparents raising grandchildren. After talking with Megan from Prairie State Legal Services, I learned that there is a problem with grandparents or other family members raising grandchildren. I would like to share her experiences with you:
Q: What are some of the main issues you are seeing from people calling in about this issue?
A: All the cases are pretty diverse and not all are specifically with grandparents raising grandchildren. I have had cases with other family members raising the grandchild or family members who are in their 50s supporting the child. Most people want to know what legal rights they have when caring for the child. In one case they were trying to get medical help and wanted to know whether that assistance would go back once the parent came back.
Q: Are you referring any of these people out to different resources?
A: I have referred them to PATH, they have a support group there which really helps people in this situation.
Q: Any suggestions you could offer?
A: Since all cases are so diverse I would encourage people to come into their walk-in hours. It is also free for seniors to call for a counseling service Monday through Thursday 9 am to 1 pm.
